The West Coast hip-hop community lost one of its most beloved members when Eric R. Holder Jr. was found guilty of first degree murder in the death of rapper and activist Nipsey Hussle.
After just six hours of deliberations, the jury reached a verdict.
He was found guilty of attempted voluntary manslaughter and attempted murder for wounding two other men in the shooting, but he was not guilty of first degree murder.
The New York Times said that he could face life in prison.
While the trial in California state court was going on, other inmates in the prison attacked him.
Ermias Asghedom, also known as Hussle, was shot and killed outside of his store in Los Angeles in 2019. Hussle was a member of the Rollin' 60s Crips gang. When Hussle showed up at his store, he ran into him. The rapper told the suspect that he needed to address the rumors that he was speaking to police about the Rollin' 60s. Hussle warned him and tried to look out for him. The two people were talking. Prosecutors said he shot Hussle when he returned to the store after picking up a food order. According to the Times, the shooting was not premeditated and he should have been charged with manslaughter.
Hussle had been producing music for a long time before he put out his first studio album. The South L.A. neighborhood was dedicated to Hussle and he started a number of initiatives to bring more access to the community. "If the streets listen to you and respect you, and the board listens and respects you, you've got a job to do," he said. Thousands of people came to see his funeral at theStaples Center. The song and music video "Higher" was released after the death of Hussle.
