  • Google has halted updates to messaging app KakaoTalk in South Korea for offering its own billing method.
  • The Play Store has a standing rule for developers to use Google’s first-party billing system for in-app purchases.
  • KakaoTalk is temporarily offering a direct app installation file in response to the block.

Due to its restrictive attitude towards third-party payment methods, the current billing system policy of the internet giant has caused controversy in many parts of the world. South Korea passed a bill prohibiting tech giants from forcing developers to use their first-party billing method, but that hasn't stoppedgoogle from cracking down on the policy's first casualty

According to a report from South Korea, the search giant halted Play Store updates to the popular messaging app due to billing issues. The app's website still has an external payment link as of June 1st, when the country's billing system policy was implemented.

According to the report, the messaging app uses its own billing method to allow users to purchase items outside of the app. The Mountain View-based giant currently allows eligible third-party payments in South Korea as part of its new policy, but developers must only offer them as an option along with the first-party method. External links aren't included. The block was caused by Kakao Talk not following the rule.

The necessary updates haven't been given to KakaoTalk for the country. It can be downloaded from Apple's App Store or directly from the website. If it doesn't obey the rules, it could be removed from the store.
