Frenkie de Jong
De Jong made 47 appearances for Barcelona last season

Even though Manchester United have an agreement in place to sign Frenkie de Jong, Barcelona insists that the player is not for sale.

Last week, United agreed a 65 million euro fee, plus add-ons, with Barcelona for the Netherlands international and that deal is still active.

Joan Laporta said that they don't want to sell De Jong.

A five-year contract was signed by De Jong after he joined for a fee of $655 million. Barcelona may need to sell high earning players to balance the books.

An outline deal is in place with United, but progress has been slow.

A move to the Red Devil's would make sense since it would make sense for him to work with his former boss at the club.

"We know he has offers," Laporta said. We would consider it at some point, but right now we are not selling the player.

Analysis - Salary issue holds up deal

Simon Stone is a sports reporter for the British Broadcasting Corporation.

There is a piece in the Spanish newspaper that explains why the transfer is taking so long

The restructure of his Barcelona contract was designed to help the La Liga giants through the Covid-19 epidemic, according to the report.

According to the report, De Jong's salary was reduced to 3m euros in 2020-21 and 6m euros last year. He is due to make 18 million euros over the next three years and 19 million in the final year of his contract.

If he were to leave for United now, he would want some kind of compensation for the money he didn't earn by now.
