Hopes of resolution are dashed by mediation failure.
Rogers and the Competition Bureau were at odds over Rogers wanting to purchase Shaw.
The two companies issued a terse statement on July 6 that said meetings with the Competition Commissioner did not result in a resolution of the Commissioner's objections to the proposed merger.
Rogers and Shaw said in May that they wouldn't close the deal until Boswell's issues are solved. The companies said in their statement that the door to a negotiated settlement with the Competition Bureau was still open.
The statement said thatRogers and Shaw are still talking to the commissioner. Rogers and Shaw plan to work with the commissioner to highlight the many benefits of the merger to all Canadians, including maintaining a strong and sustainable fourth wireless carrier across Canada through the proposed divesture of Freedom Wireless to Quebecor Inc
Shaw is the owner of Freedom. The sale of Freedom to Quebecor was arranged after the takeover by Rogers.
The mediation with the Competition Bureau didn't produce a resolution.
