There was a flash back to May 4, 2020. The day the official Star Wars website announced that Taika Waititi was going to make a Star Wars movie, he co- wrote with Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed Waititi's project a few months later, calling it a "fresh, unique, and unexpected" movie in the franchise.

One would think that Waititi had a general idea of what the movie would be about. Maybe it's not a full script but an idea. Kennedy would tell people who owned Disney stock that it was fresh and unique. Waititi makes it sound like there's no idea at all.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the director of this week's THOR: LOVE AND THUD was asked about the trend of Star Wars projects being abandoned. Waititi said it was possible that it would happen to him. 10 years ago, Taika would be so worried about that. It isn't right if it's not right. It isn't ready if it's not ready. I don't want to hurry. It makes sense, it is my film, and I wouldn't want to just jump into it and not feel that it's unique. That would be a terrible thing. I'm writing right now. I want to come up with an idea that people love.

There isn't an idea. The confusion is where to see it. Waititi hedged his bets by explaining that he wanted to do something new with the franchise, but didn't know what it would be. He told Total Film that he thinks the Star Wars universe needs to expand. I don't think I'm needed in the Star Wars universe to make a film where everyone's like, 'Oh great, well that's the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah that's Chewbacca's grandmother.' I would like to create some new characters and expand the world, otherwise it feels like it is a very small story.

Rolling Stone pointed out that if Waititi really wants to go away from Star Wars, the movie doesn't need to be "Star Wars" Waititi said yes. I know what you mean. He said that whoever said that is correct. I thought about it now. If you take away all of the Star Wars stuff, it's not Star Wars. I said something a couple of weeks ago and now I'm back to square one.

The truth is something that we don't know. Is Waititi still coming up with an idea? It's possible that an idea was settled two years ago but has since been reworked. Waititi may have put us off the scent with these quotes. Is this project like the Rian Johnson trilogy, Episode 9 or Phil Lord and Chris Miller's solo? Lucasfilm couldn't give us a comment because it was too much to think about. We will have to wait and see if we get a real update. We might be being messed with.
