The Disney Parks log flume thrill ride, which was inspired by The Princess and the Frog, has been renamed. In the wake of Disney taking accountability for its handling of slave folklore in 1946's Song of the South, Splash Mountain has been renamed.
The Disney Parks team revealed the new name and hosted a panel to discuss the attraction's new story, which was inspired by Disney's first black princess, The Princess and the Frog Charita Carter, executive producer of relevancy activations at Walt Disney Imagineering, spoke at the event. The entire panel can be watched here. We have the chance to re-educate people with her, we have the chance to bring her to a new generation, and we have the chance to give our guests an experience that is a love letter to New Orleans.
Carter said that the ride would pick up on the characters from the movie. She said that they were going to be on a musical. There will be new original music that is influenced by the music from the film and we will be able to draw upon the talent from the film such as Mama Odie. A behind-the-scenes look at the research conducted in New Orleans to bring to life a new, fun, and authentic tale was shared by the Disney Imagineering team.
The daughter of New Orleans' "Queen of Creole Cuisine" helped inform the team. Chase said that his mother appreciated being an African American. She was always happy when people from all over the country came to visit her at the restaurant. She was able to be an ambassador to New Orleans. She wants Disney to honor her mother's legacy through the attraction.
