Doctors said in a case report that a middle-aged man had taken more than 80 times the recommended daily amount of vitamins and minerals as part of a regimen recommended by a private nutritionist in the UK.
After a month of taking the supplements, the man experienced stomach pains, vomiting, leg pains, ringing in his ears, and increased thirst. After he stopped taking them, he still had symptoms.
His calcium levels were so high that a blood test showed that he had seven times the recommended amount of vitamins D and D2 in his system. His kidneys were shown to be at risk of damage.
According to the authors, the man's case was uncommon, but that excessive levels of vitamin D can cause effects on the body that can bebilitating.
