You don't know until you've been picked up and taken.

It's the British way to make sure that doesn't happen. It's best to not get your hopes up. It's probably too good to be true.

Sport is about giving in to hope. The highs are all sweeter than the lows. If you never loved in the first place, your heart won't break.

The heart of English Test cricket was torn apart and stamped on. In 17 matches, one win was lost from Ahmedabad toAdelaide.

The joy, fun and wonder of the English game has been restored in just five weeks.

The way in which Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow knocked off an England record target probably didn't do justice to the magnitude of the achievement.

Same players but much different results

England's revival is remarkable because it has been done with the same players that have been bad in the past.

All of the England squad have found something extra in Bar Root, who has continued on his path towards being England's greatest batter of all time.

Bairstow has brought 589 runs in his last five outings, an average of 199. While Alex Lees is growing into an intimidating figure at the top of the order, the experiment done by Ollie Pope has largely worked.

Zak was batting like Michael McIntyre before he got public support from Ben.

In the second Test against New Zealand, Jack Leach was a man out of his depth, but in the third he was back to his best. James Anderson and Stuart Broad are being persuaded to squeeze more out of their aging bodies and Matthew Potts is the only new face.

The way the team talk in the dressing room is one of the ways that this has been achieved.

"It's the language that we speak and the mentality that we get across, that's what it's all about," said the coach, who has urged his team to be "rock stars" and "entertainers".

The power of positive thinking

It's an idea that could be tested in daily life. If I change my mentality, I may be able to put stripes in the grass.

The cost of living crisis could be solved with the help of two people.

Small changes on and off the field make a big difference to England's performance.

There were too many backroom staff in the dressing room. Practice sessions are for people who don't want to do a lot of things. The players meet later in the morning of a Test match to warm up.

England had Stuart Broad in the middle on the fourth day of the Edgbaston Test. Broad would have tried to take a chunk out of the target if either Bairstow orRoot got out. They called him the "nighthawk" instead of a night watchman.

Four of England's wins this summer have been batting last. When he won the toss and chose to bowl, there were two of those.

The idea works on a few levels. The first is a preference for chasing runs that has served England well in white-ball cricket and the second is a willingness to chase any target.

If the pitch is good for batting, England have taken the maximum 80 available to them so far this summer.

Four times in a row, England have chased scores in excess of 300. What happens to the opponent's mentality if they know they will have to post a high goal? If England were asked to bat first, it would be interesting.

What next for resurgent England?

Where are England going? There is a limit to what can be accomplished.

They have to wait more than a month for their next series against a South Africa side that will arrive here unsure of what to expect.

Next summer's Ashes series can't come soon enough, as the winter tour of Pakistan looks like it's going to be a fascinating test of the 'Bzball' philosophy.

The way we've been playing, a little bit intimidated by what we're capable of doing, will be looked at by some sides around the world.

If sides are wary of what we're capable of, it can only make us more confident.

The Aussies might have taken notice of England's method.

"A couple of new words we're using about our approach is about being proactive and being brave," said Australia captain Pat Cummins.

As long as you are happy to fail, failure is fine.

It could have been from the man himself.

Allow yourself to be influenced by England's Test cricket. Even if that doesn't happen, there will be lows along the way. Take it easy until then.

It's great to be a part of it. Being a child again is like being a kid again.

Get carried away and go on.
