Some Windows laptop manufacturers are worried that sales of Intel-based laptops will be negatively affected by the upcoming launch of Apple's MacBook Air with the M2 chip.
According to the report, a Wintel brand vendor said that at a price point of US$1,000-1,500, the MacBook Air will crowd out other high end notebooks. The report said that the price of the new MacBook Air was within an acceptable range for consumers.
The report claims that Windows laptop makers are worried about consumer sentiment being affected by the economic downturn.
Pricing for the new MacBook Air starts at $1,199 in the United States, with the M2 chip offering up to 18% faster CPU performance and up to 34% faster graphics performance compared to the M1 chip in the previous model. The new MacBook Air is expected to be available in July.
Apple promised industry-leading performance per watt when it announced in 2020 that it would be transitioning from Intel to its own custom-designed Silicon chips. The only remaining Intel-based Macs are the Mac mini and the Mac Pro tower, both of which are expected to be updated later this year.
Apple has changed the look of the Mac. The MacBook Air with an M1 chip was superior to the maxed out Intel-based 16-inch MacBook Pro. The 8core Intel Xeon W processor in the base model Mac Pro tower costs $5,999 and is slower than the M2 chip.
Intel recruited a former "I'm a Mac" actor for its campaign to promote Windows PCs over Macs. The CEO of Intel said his company would fight hard to win back business from Apple.
