According to multiple reports, Mike Grier will be the first black general manager of an NHL team.

A news conference has been scheduled for 2 p.m., but the hiring has not been confirmed. The new GM is expected to be announced on Tuesday.

He played 14 seasons in the NHL for four different teams. He was the hockey operations advisor for the New York Rangers for the past season.

Joe Will took over when Doug Wilson left the team because of medical reasons. Wilson left the club in April after 19 years.

Four days after firing head coach Bob Boughner and his staff, the Sharks are said to have named their general manager. Will said in a statement that the new GM should have full authority to hire the next coach as eight other head-coaching vacancies already have been filled.

The longest absence from the playoffs in franchise history has been three years for the Sharks.
