A Spanish fighter jet was dispatched to intercept an Easyjet flight after a passenger made a fake bomb threat on social media.

The 18-year-old hoaxer, who was traveling on the London-to-Menorca flight with five friends, was arrested at Menorca airport and is awaiting a court hearing.

A military signal that a plane has been intercept and its pilot should follow course can be seen in the onboard footage of the intercept.

One of the passengers can be heard asking why it is doing that.

Around half an hour behind schedule, the Easyjet plane made a safe landing in Menorca, a holiday island in Spain. The plane was taken to a security area at the airport where passengers were allowed to disembark for two hours.

Passengers were asked to identify their luggage for security checks.

Easyjet confirmed that the flight was escorted by a military plane and that it was delayed due to security checks.

The statement said that the safety and security of its passengers and crew is always Easyjet's highest priority.

It could cost the Spanish military more than $60,000 to scramble the fighter jet and pay for the fuel, according to an aviation expert. Bray said that the Spanish Ministry of Defence might charge this to the airline.
