A San Francisco couple that parked their car for decades on a paved part of their property in front of their home has been banned from doing so unless they want to be fined a lot.

Judy and Ed Craine were told by the city that they couldn't park on the pavement on their property because they have been there for 36 years, according to KGO-TV. They received a notice of a fine and a threat of a fee for parking on their property.

Ed Craine said it was startling to be told you can't use something that you could use for a long time.

The city's planning chief said a decades-old city code forbids residents from amassing cars in their yards. An anonymous complaint led to officials looking into the issue.

The property owner is upset. Sider thinks he would feel the same way.

The space has been used for parking for a while. A blurry aerial shot from the 1930s wasn't clear enough for planning officials to make a decision.

The fines were thrown away after the couple stopped parking on the pavement. According to the city's code, parking can be resumed on the paved property if a cover is built for it.
