As it makes more progress toward its climate goals, Amazon has begun delivering packages by bike and foot in the UK for the first time. There is a hub in central London. The company says the walkers and e- bikes will deliver more than a million parcels a year. Thousands of van deliveries will be replaced.
More than a tenth of the city's ultra low emission zone will be served by the e-bike and on-foot couriers at the beginning. Amazon and its delivery partners won't have to pay the London Congestion Charge because electric bikes and fully electric cars are exempt.
There will be more e-cargo delivery hubs in the UK by the end of the year. In the country, it has more than 1,000 electric delivery vans. Five electric heavy goods vehicles were added to the UK fleet.
Amazon has used cargo e- bikes before. In France and Germany, they're being used for deliveries. Scooters are employed in Italy and Spain. In Paris, the company was fulfilling two-thirds of its deliveries with e- bikes, on foot, and electric vans.
50 percent of packages will have net-zero carbon emissions by the year 2030. As part of its Climate Pledge, it expects to become net- zero carbon by the year 2040.
The company wants to run its operations completely on renewable energy by the year 2025. More than 30,000 additional solar panels will be installed by the end of the year. Amazon wants to double the number of on-site solar projects it has in the UK.
