The UK's Ministry of Defence said that the Russian military will likely focus on conquering a larger swath of eastern Ukraine after taking control of the last Ukrainian stronghold.

Russia made "steady progress" in its campaign to seize the city of Lysychansk, according to the ministry.

The MoD said that the Ukrainian forces had withdrawn from the area. The city was under the control of the Ukrainians.

President Zelenskyy promised to take back the city soon.

The UK was of the opinion that Russian efforts would now focus on the more southerly part of the Donbas.

The administrative regions of Donetsk and Luhansk are part of the Donbas. It was the focus of Russia's campaign after it failed to take vast amounts of Ukrainian territory in a single attack.

According to the UK update, the fight for the Donbas has been grinding and attritional.

Since the beginning of the year, parts of Luhansk have been occupied by the rebels. After the Russian invasion in February, the Russians and the rebels turned the tide against the Ukrainians.

The Russian military has an advantage in terms of the number of troops and the power of its cannons.

Smaller gains have been made by the Ukrainians. Ukrainian forces regained control of Snake Island from Russia last week.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants more weapons from the West to stop the Russians. The US has recently delivered missile systems to the Ukranian government.
