Jacob deGrom struck out five of the six hitters he faced and threw 18 of 24 pitches for strikes in his first minor league rehabilitation start.
deGrom hit a batter with a pitch, but he still pitched a complete game against the Hammerheads.
More than a dozen of the young players gathered behind deGrom as he prepared to pitch in the game.
He was happy with how the start went, even though he admitted to having some nerves.
The main thing for me was trying to locate the pitch and pitch off it. DeGrom said everything felt good. I feel 100 percent. You cannot push it because it was bone. I had to wait for the bone to heal before moving forward.
The two-time Cy Young Award winner has been out of action all season because of a stress reaction in his shoulder.
On July 7, 2021, DeGrom made his most recent major league appearance. He missed the second half of last season with right forearm tightness and a sprained elbow, then returned in spring training this year and made two starts.
He was out for a while because of the stress reaction and didn't throw again until June. Before Sunday's start, the right-handed pitcher had faced hitters at the team's complex in Florida.
DeGrom will need several minor league rehabilitation outings before he is ready to rejoin the rotation.
DeGrom said that everyone wants to be out there competing. It's very difficult. You would like to help your team.
Max Scherzer is expected to return from injury Tuesday night at Cincinnati. The three-time Cy Young Award winner has been on the disabled list since May 18 with a right shoulder injury.
