The Despicable Me franchise featured the babbling yellow monstrosities of Illumination's Minions, but they have grown far beyond it. The creatures have become a cultural fixture, for better and for worse, after their spinoff movie made over a billion dollars at the box office. It is not surprising that the sequel to the first Despicable takes the box office, but it is surprising that it is the best Despicable movie yet.
The film is expected to break the Independence Day four-day record of $129.2 million before the holiday weekend is over. At the time of writing, it's the highest domestic start for an animated film sinceFrozen 2 in 2019. If it beats the three-day opening of the original Minions, it will become Illumination's highest domestic opener of all time. Since there isn't any real kids competition, the Minions are free to focus on themselves. The Minions may still put up a good fight against the two gods of thunder even after the next big outing.
Tom Cruise is in a movie called Top Gun: Mavericks. The sequel to the 1986 film has a surprising amount of longevity behind it. Overall it has crossed the $1 billion mark earlier in the week. The film is Cruise's best at the box office and the second highest-grossing film of all time. The film will likely go even further before its theatrical run ends, because Paramount is pushing the film during the holiday weekend.
