The company is being sued for failing to prevent racial discrimination at its factory in California. The lawsuit, which was filed in a California court last week, details workers' claims that they were subjected to racial slurs, derogatory comments, and racially-motivated harassment.
Workers say their colleagues used the N-word and other racist terms to describe their work culture. Racist graffiti, drawings of swastikas, and the N-word were found on bathroom walls, benches, lockers, and workstations.
Management retaliated against workers for reporting and complaining about the discrimination, according to the lawsuit. Wilson claims she was sexually and racially harassed by her coworkers. Her managers didn't report discrimination or retaliate against her for complaining.
A worker at the company claims he was fired after nine years because he reported discrimination. Several other workers claim that they were denied promotions due to their race and that they were given the most physically demanding jobs at the company.
There are many lawsuits targeting the company for alleged discrimination and harassment. Last year, a black former elevator operator won his case and was awarded a reduced amount of money. The company paid $1 million to an employee who claimed they didn't do anything after he was called a racial slur.
In February, California's Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) filed a lawsuit against the company, claiming that the factory is a "racially segregating environment where Black workers are subjected to racial slurs and discriminated against." TheEEOC is investigating the automaker.
The company strongly opposed all forms of discrimination and harassment according to a post on its website.
