Less than two weeks before the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, Miki Sudo and Nick Wehry lay out in their kitchen everything they need to consume nearly 90 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

Sudo and Wehry try to get as close to contest conditions as possible, which means everything is hauled downstairs outside of their apartment. Wehry ate his hot dogs in the rain.

Sudo says that they haven't practiced together in a while. I haven't since 2019. No next year.

One of us has to practice and the other is on baby duty.

The first couple to do it with a baby are the highest ranked in Major League Eating. Sudo is the top ranked woman in the world and Wehry is fourth. She has two world records in ice cream and hard-boiled eggs.

They demolished 88 hot dogs as a couple. The women's division was won by Sudo, who broke the record with 48.6 hot dogs. They are the top dogs of eating.

How do they train their bodies to eat? How do their stomachs react? We asked a camera crew, photographer and reporter to find out what happened.

The appetite for competitive eating was discovered by Sudo and Wehry. Sudo was a broke college student who found out that a local restaurant was giving away a large bowl of pho. She tasted head-to-head competition for the first time in Las Vegas after it spiraled into challenges. Sudo said he wouldn't do it. I didn't feel like I belonged on stage with the big men. Over 35 people were defeated by Sudo. I feel like I belong on any stage I walk on.

On his work break, a former body builder named Wehry could eat eight Wendy's sandwiches and still have room for a burger. Friends talked Wehry into participating in a donut eating contest for charity. It was like "Wait a minute" when I won that. I was able to make money. We raised money for a sick child and I got a free donut. That's a good deal, dude.

Sudo's left wrist is mostly useless in the weeks leading up to Nathan's. It's the same hand she normally uses to roll and dunk hot dog buns in water and eat without it being a problem. Wehry doesn't want to fight Tyson with one hand or two. It is possible that he may be correct. Sudo finished second in Lubbock, Texas, with 28.25 egg rolls. Sudo plans to give it a shot and hope to beat his own record. A girl is capable of dreaming.

Four years ago, Wehry and Sudo met at the hotel gym. Sudo wanted to burn out contest day nerves on the treadmill when she asked Wehry if he would take a picture with Nathan. This was not cute. We didn't talk after Sudo introduced himself. They didn't see each other again until four months after Wehry invited Sudo to the burger challenge. They had their first date eight months later.

Consider how long it would take to consume 76 hot dogs. Joey Chestnut holds a world record. It's more than eight and 26 times the daily recommended amount of salt if you break it down. It's taking your body to an extreme level. Is it a competition to eat a sport? Both Wehry and Sudo agreed. Wehry says this isn't your uncle at the barbecue. Do you think it's easy? We will see how simple it is if you show up to a qualification.

The ridiculousness of what we do isn't lost on us. Professional wrestling is a billion dollar industry and grown men fight in underwear. Sometimes actors and actresses are pretending to be other people. What they do is very serious. It's possible to find ridiculousness in virtually anything.

A couple once used a plastic tablecloth to roll 80 sheets of nori into a 10 pound roll. The challenges are more dangerous. Imagine cooking bacon with no grease fire. It will make your apartment smell bad.

Men and women have the same streak of seven consecutive titles. She would be one of the four heads on Mount Rushmore if it were possible. Sudo took 2021, when she was pregnant with Max, off to add an eighth mustard belt.

Sudo says a lot of people are unsure if he can regain his spot at the top after taking two years off. It would be great for the doubters to know that I have what it takes to be the top female eater in Major League Eating.

Max doesn't know that his parents are top competitive eaters. Wehry has a daughter and son from a previous marriage and he wants them to know the difference between competition and daily eating habits. Wehry doesn't want to get a call from the middle school in a few years like "Sylvie ate seven slices of pizza today." This is something that adults do and she realized it. This is something Daddy does and it's silly.

Hot dogs and buns are usually not in Wehry and Sudo's cart. The majority of the time it's filled with chicken breasts. It's probably not what you would expect from a couple who crush the food pyramid. People still think that high-rank competitive eaters are large men. It's not the case. A lot of the top ranked eaters are lean and fit. Training includes working out. Sudo says she felt better after she ate a lot of hot dogs.

There are questions when you go to Sam's Club with a lot of hot dogs. Sudo says that people assume they are having a barbecue. A practice for two costs about 80 dollars. Nathan's hot dogs are on sale The weight of the hot dogs and buns is the most important factor in their decision. It's even better if you can get cased hot dogs. Some people claim that the natural casing has a different snap than the competition one.

Max was named after the hotel where Sudo and Wehry met. He travels across the country for various competition with his parents. Coney Island is included this year. Sudo started packing a few weeks before the competition so that he could get the diapers for Max.

Sausage is made from package to plate in 30 minutes. Sudo started in February and has done two full sessions and two sets of 24 hot dogs just for speed.

Between January and July he will get in about a dozen practices. "Any small hot dog eating success did not come from genetics," Wehry said. 'I'm going to figure out every little thing I could do better than people who are better at this than me.' I will do everything to an almost psychotic degree of completeness.

Most of Sudo's preparation is focused on making sure she knows what she's eating. Sudo says you don't want to be thinking about the chicken wing's structure during the contest. You need to know how to remove the meat from the bone. It's difficult to do regional-based foods in a way that mimics contest conditions. Where are you supposed to find pizza in West Virginia?

We all know the sensation of being full after a meal. Competitive eaters have a different phenomenon called flavor fatigue. The body begins to reject what you're putting in after being exposed to the same things over and over again. Competitors fight flavor fatigue in different ways. A strawberry banana orange drink mix is added to the water that Sudo uses to soak buns. Wehry likes pineapples. Sometimes you need something different because your body will say no. The last 10 hot dogs are less terrifying than the 45 hot dogs.

The bites are calculated. Hot dogs are broken into smaller pieces and eaten. Hot dogs are eaten in a row. Buns are dunked into Sudo's drink mix and then popped into her mouth. Sudo says that if it is possible to eat hot dogs competitively, his would be more pretty. Nick is more like force.

The plates are empty and the stomach is full after 10 minutes. Wehry says you feel like a ninja turtle. It's good that everything eventually digests, but it's even better that it doesn't bother you during and after. Sudo says that competitive eating is linked to his identity. It's part of who I am. I wouldn't have it any other way, even though I used to have mixed feelings about that. I met the love of my life as a result of it. There is a happy family for me now. I'm really fortunate.
