This is the most important election of our lifetimes according to pundits. It was true in 2016 America's political and cultural landscape was changed by the election of Donald Trump. Six years ago, Trump offered a devil's bargain to evangelical Christians: If they gave a thrice-married, biblically literate New York City libertine their vote, he'd deliver Supreme Court justices who'd overturn the abortion law. McConnell and Democrats who stayed home in 2016 because of their dislike for Clinton helped deliver. The war between the states over abortion has consequences we can only dimly glimpse.

The 6-3 court is detonating decades of precedents. The hearings on January 6 revealed the 45th president's contempt for democracy, institutions, and traditions, as well as his use of lies, intimidation, and violence. Our national leader's madness made the country sick. Political enemies have become a regular target of threats and violence. Meanness is in the air; meanness has been proven. The red/blue divide is irreparably damaged by Trump's actions. In the immediate future, there will be prosecutions of Trump allies and possibly Trump himself, as well as payback investigations by Republicans if they control the House. We can only hope that Trump's impact on this nation will linger after he's dead.
