The NBA sent a strong signal that the transition take foul is about to change.

There will be a penalty of one free throw, plus retention of the ball, at all three summer league this season, first the two smaller ones in San Francisco and Salt Lake City that start this weekend, then the 30 team one in Las Vegas opens that next week.

Changing the rule at the NBA level has been a topic of discussion for a long time. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver told The Associated Press that he expects the foul to get harsher next season.

The NBA's board of governors is scheduled to meet later this month.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Silver said he was confident that a change would happen. Even though this is a rule that we've been experimenting with in the G League for the last four years, I don't think I'm over confident that it will be the last change.

A foul is committed to stop a transition opportunity for the opposing team. The disadvantageous team usually takes the ball out of bounds because of a foul. In the G League, when a defender commits a take foul, the foul team gets one free throw before the game starts.

Golden State coach Steve Kerr thinks the take foul needs to be abolished.

The NBA uses the G League and Summer League as testing laboratories before making rule changes. The coaches' challenge and resetting the shot clock to 14 seconds in offensive rebound situations are among those that started at those levels.

The NBA will test new policies where referees can't initiate replay reviews in the final 2 minutes of fourth quarters and overtime, and referees won't be able to initiate reviews of goaltending or basket interference during the final 2 minutes of overtime.

That's right.
