Uvalde School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo resigned from the city council of Uvalde, Texas, after being criticized for his response to the school shooting.
On Friday, Arredondo told the Uvalde Leader-News that he was stepping down to allow the mayor, the city council and the city staff to move forward.
The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District placed Arredondo on administrative leave in June after the police chief was criticized for his handling of the Robb Elementary School shooting.
The massacre took place a week after Arredondo was sworn in as a member of the council. Forbes did not get a response from the city council.
In an interview with the Texas Tribune, Arredondo denied that he was in charge of the response to the school massacre. The Texas Department of Safety Director testified during a Texas state Senate hearing that the response to the attack was an "abject failure" and that the school police chief made "terrible decisions." Even though a tool firefighters use to force open doors was available eight minutes after law enforcement arrived, students and teachers waited more than an hour and a half in a classroom with the shooter. He decided to place the lives of officers before the lives of children because Arredondo stopped law enforcement from entering the building. Three minutes after law enforcement officials arrived, Ramos could have been stopped for violating active- shooter protocols.
The police chief of the Uvalde schools was put on leave.
Arredondo quit on the city.
