  • The 10-year-old rape victim in Brazil only realized she was pregnant after 22 weeks.

  • She was taken to the hospital by her family for an abortion that wouldn't work because it was past 20 weeks.

  • The judge tried to convince the girl to keep the baby.

A judge in Brazil tried to convince a rape victim not to have an abortion and ordered her removed from her family.

In Brazil, abortion in cases of rape is legal, but audio from the hearing was leaked and made public last month.

The girl was taken to the hospital by her mother after she realized she was pregnant. The hospital only performed abortions up to 20 weeks after she was 22 weeks pregnant. Rape victims in Brazil can get an abortion at any time.

The case was sent to a judge. The judge and prosecutor tried to put the child up for adoption if the girl didn't complete her pregnancies. The judge ordered the girl to be removed from her family and placed in a shelter as authorities investigated abuse, but the measure was ordered to prevent the girl from getting an abortion.

The judge directed inaccurate information to the girl and her family in order to pressure them to keep the baby.

Do you understand that if we interrupt the pregnant process, the baby is born and we have to wait for the baby to die? According to the Post, the person said something that wasn't true. Is it possible that you understand that? Is it true that it is cruel? Is the baby going to cry until he dies?

The leaked audio shows the judge asking the girl if she could be pregnant a little while longer.

The incident showed how difficult it is for women to get an abortion even if they are allowed to. In Brazil, abortions are legal in the case of rape, incest, or when the woman's life is in danger. An abortion can be done at any time in a pregnant woman's life.

"What we see in Brazil and other countries in Latin America where abortion is criminalized, on top of the law, there are barriers created that make it harder to access care," said Debora Diniz, an anthropologist at the University of Brasilia. The most vulnerable are the ones who are most affected.

According to the Washington Post, the girl had an abortion on June 23, more than a month after she first sought it. The hospital was ordered to do the operation. According to the AP, Brazil's judicial watchdog agency is investigating the incident. A petition has been started to have her removed from the bench.

The incident could show what could happen in the US after the Supreme Court overturned the contraceptives law.

Insecurity in the judicial system creates a space ripe for misinformation and fear.
