New civics education training for Florida teachers promotes incorrect ideas about the separation of church and state according to teachers.
The Florida Department of Education will host 10 regional civics professional learning training sessions for 2,500 teachers this summer to accommodate over 2,500 teachers during the summer of 2022. A $700 stipend is included in the training.
The training will be aligned to the revised civics and government standards according to the FDOE.
During a press conference on Thursday, the governor said the new civic education was pushing back on the "woke indoctrination" of children and that kids in the state were learning real history.
He said that they are promoting civics and history that is accurate.
The training stated that it is a misconception that the founding fathers wanted a strict separation of church and state.
According to the Post, Richard Judd said that civics education in the state of Florida is geared towards pushing some particular points of view. There is no separation of church and state according to the thesis run by them.
Judd said that teachers were told to think like that.
Legislation has been pushed that would limit what students can learn and discuss.
The presentation slides were obtained by The Miami Herald through a public records request and show that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson did not mention that they owned slaves.
Barbara Segal is a government teacher at Fort Lauderdale High School.
There was a very strong Christian fundamentalist way to look at things. Segal said that it was troubling.
Some teachers at the meeting told Anna Fusco that they were told to present only one side of history.
Fusco said that they slipped in a Christian values piece, ignoring the fact that this country is made up of so many different cultures and religions.
