Three-time All-Star and three-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert has been the face of the Utah Jazz for over 50 years.

He joined the Minnesota Wolves on Friday.

The full parameters of the deal have been reported.

    • Timberwolves receive: Rudy Gobert
    • Jazz receive: Malik Beasley, Patrick Beverley, Walker Kessler, Jarred Vanderbilt, Leandro Bolmaro, a 2023 first-round pick, a 2025 first-round pick, a 2027 first-round pick (all unprotected) and a top-5 protected 2029 first-round pick

We'll use the tried and true "winners and loser" formula to sort through it all.

The move could bring Gobert's defensive impact into sharper focus.

The Jazz have surrendered the most points per 100 possessions in the league since he became a starter. It's hard to believe that the number won't go up in 2022-23.

He is a winner for points of pride over the next couple years. Gobert is going to a rising team that needs something from him.

Karl- Anthony Towns is already a star on one end of the floor, as evidenced by the fact that he is 14th all-time in career offensive box plus/minus.

We have more than enough of a sample to know that Towns won't be a strong defensive anchor.

Every other player on the team is given a safety net by Gobert. Towns can be confident that a blow-by outside won't lead to two points. You have Gobert to beat if you get by the first line of defense.

Gobert may have less attempts than he did in Utah. He'll still be an ultra-efficient rim-roller and offensive rebounder even though he's a scorer. D'Angelo Russell is more of a distribution minded person.

It's not likely that this deal will make Utah better next season.

Kessler is 20 years old and is a rim protectors. He will take time to become something. Everyone else is a role player. Plugging them in will probably lead to some losses.

Utah is plus- 7.5 points per 100 possessions when Mitchell and Gobert are both on the floor, and minus-0.1 when Mitchell and Gobert are not on the floor.

They're all different degrees of solid, but they're not making up the difference.

This trade needs to be more about Utah's future than it is about the present.

The first couple picks are likely to be mediocre with Gobert in his prime. We don't know what will happen between now and 2027.

The selections could turn into stars. Future trades could include them. More long-term flexibility is now available.

Getting out of Gobert's contract could be a plus down the road.

Gobert will be 33. He won't be the player he is now. If Danny Ainge wants to build a more modern core like the one he built with the Boston Celtics, it will be easier to find and build it with less cap space.

Gobert was 0-7 against KAT during his career. The Jazz big man held Towns below his career averages in those games.

He will get plenty of help from Gobert on both ends of the floor now that he's avoided those head-to-heads.

The pick-your-poison scenario will be forced by Gobert's rim- running. They will be buried with jumpers if they collapse inside. They will give up a lot of dunks to Gobert if they stay home.

His new teammate will give him a lot of opportunities. Gobert's 12.4 points per game rank first among players with a career average of seven or fewer shots per game and the distance between his mark and second place is the same as the distance between second and 178th.

Gobert will do a lot of what Commodores did last year.

Gobert is the best rim guard in the league. Going forward, Towns doesn't have to worry a lot about that criticism. With Gobert dominating the defensive glass, KAT may get a few more easy opportunities in transition.

It is likely that Mitchell wanted this.

Reports of tension between him and Gobert have been going on for a long time. The relationship was said to be "unsalvageable".

He will get his chance to be the face of the franchise if a Mitchell trade isn't next. According to public reporting, that's where this is going.

The Jazz gathered six first-round picks in the past 24 hours, including 7-footer Walker Kessler, the 22nd overall pick in the 2022 Draft. The Jazz plan to retool the roster around All-Star G Donovan Mitchell.

That is a path that makes sense.

The Celtics that Ainge built just made the finals with a starting unit that featured five players who could switch all over the floor. Utah may have a higher playoff ceiling if Mitchell is at the 1 and the other four slots are filled by positionless players. It would eventually happen.

It does not have those players yet. It might take a long time to get there. Mitchell will be under a lot of pressure if things don't go well on the first day.

He might be willing to stick it out. Is this going to lead to a wandering eye?

League sources feel that it's a matter of when and not if, with Mitchell eventually asking to go to a "glamour market" like New York or Miami.

The arrival of Gobert is expected to benefit a number of members of the Wolves.

D'Angelo Russell was an All-Star in the last year. The big man got nearly a fifth of his assists that year.

The middle-of- the-floor funnel that pick-and-rolls often create has another vertical threat to operate with.

AnthonyEdwards should now be able to attack more disadvantaged defenses as a flanker. With the attention Russell and Gobert will give,Edwards should get plenty of open catch-and-shoot threes on kickouts.

He will have closeouts if defenders force him out of those looks.

Everyone on the Jazz looked better thanks to Gobert.

Utah scored more and allowed less points per 100 possessions when he was in the starting lineup.

The extra time on catch-and- shoot opportunities was given by his rim runs. His defense was the most important thing.

Without the help of one of the league's best "do all the little things" players, holdovers will have to perform.

It just became more important for the three of them to contain their outside opponents because they are all in their 30's.

Everyone on the team will have to think about boxing. The pass to Gobert in the dunker's spot or above the rim is no longer available.

The new coach may have some tricks up his sleeve, but it would have been easier with Gobert on the roster.

The coach of the Jazz from the beginning of the year to the end of it. Utah was 7th in the league in winning percentage over that time.

He walked away from the job with a year left on his contract. We might have a better idea of what those were.

Whether he knew a trade like this was going to happen or not, he got out just in time to avoid a short-term step back while maintaining a little mystique around his own value as a coach.
