After missing more than a month because of an oblique injury, New York Mets right-handed starting pitcher Max Scherzer is expected to start against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday.

The Mets' ace, an eight-time All-Star and three-time Cy Young winner, is 6-1 with a 2.54 earned run average and 59 strikeouts this season. He signed a three-year contract with the team over the summer.

The World Series winner played for five different teams before heading to New York.

After taking himself out of a start against the St. LouisCardinals with an apparent injury, he has been out for over a month.

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the word was that the pitcher would go on the injured list with a "moderate to high grade" oblique strain that would cost him six to eight weeks.

An official with the team told the New York Post that the pitcher wouldn't have to go on the injured list because his dog bit him. There was no confusion.

The Mets have been without two-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom, as well as Tylor Megill, due to injury. Chris Bassitt was put on the injured list.

The Mets have weathered the storm and are sitting first in the NL East with a 47-29 record. As the team looks to make the playoffs for the first time in two years, New York can still use Scherzer, even if he's not ready to go. It is good for them that he is returning soon.
