A group of black employees have filed a discrimination lawsuit against the company. A shareholder recently filed a suit against the company, accusing it of having a toxic work environment, as well as one by a civil rights agency.
According to the lawsuit filed at a California state court, 15 former and current Black employees said they were subjected to offensive comments by their superiors on a regular basis.
The lawsuit states that some of the comments include the words "n****r," "slavery" or "plantation." They claimed that they were often overlooked for promotions or assigned jobs that were more physically demanding. The majority of the harassment is said to have taken place at the factory of the electric car maker.
In response to previous accusations of racial discrimination, the vice president of people at the company issued a statement in October of 2021. The company did not respond immediately.
The company has been accused of discrimination in the past. A federal jury in San Francisco ordered Tesla to pay a former Black contractor $137 million after finding that he was subjected to racial discrimination at work. The California Department of Fair Employment and Housing alleges that the company discriminated against its workers of color by segregating them to the lowest level of the workforce.
A shareholder filed a lawsuit against the company, accusing them of harming their shares by ignoring worker complaints and fostering a toxic workplace.
