With the World Cup final about to go to extra time, the coach put AnnieWickett in goal.

With the game tied at 2-2, Taliaferro made a decision that may have brought a #Taliaferro Out hashtags from supporters unfamiliar with the intricacies of the game. When she was asked to coach the U.S. women's para national team, she wouldn't have considered it. She has had a fast learning curve in the sport, which is played by players with cerebral palsy and other neurological conditions.

She has learned how the men's game is seven-a-side and how the women's game is five-a-side and how that feeds into the tactics.

The Women's World Cup was held in Salou alongside the men's event. Stuart Sharp, the men's coach, and Jim Moorhouse, the director of extended sports at U.S. Soccer, were some of the people who recruited the players.

Emily Lauritsen's wife saw a message from Sauerbrunn and took notice. In order to promote the team, the centre-back wrote "Get the word out!" She had suffered a stroke in 2020 and had to check if she was eligible. She played in the World Cup four months later.

Jesslyn Kuhnel had things happen more quickly. On April 4, her mother, Wendy, found out about a national team training camp and on April 10, she was on a plane to San Diego to participate in an identification camp. One day in 2015, Kuhnel woke up and could not walk. She never imagined she would play in a World Cup.

Captain Catherine Renick had been given the opportunity to represent her country at the same time, and it had taken a long time. She contacted Kevin Hensley after suffering strokes. He is the assistant coach for the women and was the captain of the men's team for a long time. She received an email at the end of the year asking if she was going to the World Cup.

There are many stories on the roster. When she had a stroke in November of last year, she was trying to get a professional career in Romania. Emma "Joey" Martin was receiving treatment for her brain cancer during the World Cup.

They all came together in Salou, a seaside resort 90 minutes south of Barcelona. They had never competed against each other. They had a common goal, and that was to win the World Cup.

The men's version of the game has been in existence since the 1980s. Since 2000, Russia and Ukraine have dominated, with Iran and Brazil close behind.

The players receive classifications. The coach of the men's team says that it's a sliding scale, with FT3 being the least physically impaired. It's not a measure of skill. TheFT2s can be more skillful than theFT3s.

It isn't technical ability. Think sprinting speed, acceleration and decelerations.

The classification process takes place on site. The players are checked by a doctor before the tournament and then put through a series of drills and monitored for 30 minutes. Players who are not classified can't participate.

Joshua Brunais is the captain of the men's team.

The level of play is satisfactory. It's tackle time. Argentina scored a brilliant goal against England with a cross. The players on the teams played in college or in the academy. Another sign of the game's growth is that Matt Crossen is represented by Nike.

The format allows teams to leave a player high without the risk of being caught out by an opposing team. It is small-sided and end-to-end in speed. No one rotates better than the people ofUkraine. According to several opposition sides, it's hard to play against them because they have so many different positions.

It is possible for teams to have a maximum of one FT3 on the pitch at any time. In a match against England, I once took off Sean Boyle, who is probably the No. 1 goalkeeper in the world, for a FT1 to get another FT2 outfield who could press the game. If you're behind with 10 minutes to go, you take a defender off for a central player. We also say that we're going to increase the speed on the field by putting a FT1 in goal.

The tournament came to life after problems with crowded cafes and poor facilities were fixed. The United States sprang a surprise by topping a group that included Iran. Iran may have thrown the group to avoid meeting Ukraine.

Thanks to the dedication of Sharp and Moorhouse, the U.S. team has made great strides over the last decade. U.S. soccer are all-in. The medical teams, analysts, equipment staff and coaches all work on the same side. The medical staff in Salou used to work for the USWNT.

It's difficult to identify and recruit players despite that.

It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack without knowing what it looks like. "We have methods to help us be luckier than we were through social media, presentations, webinars, working with hospitals or neurological specialists, to ask if they are coming across athletes from this background."

Para soccer clubs are seeing us now. There are more than 300 players on our database for the men's national team. In four years' time, they will be knocking on the door if they are currently playing adult soccer.

The women's team are summoned to the dressing room on the eve of the match. They saw their coaches standing outside the door with smiles on their faces after walking up 50 steps in the heat. They found shirts with names on the back and they cried. It's a lot to take for Renick, who wants to hug his old friend. Her teammates reach for their phones for an impromptu photo shoot to show their appreciation for her.

Renick said that when he saw his jersey, it was just 31 years of work and investment and loving the sport and eight years of trials and tribulations living and adapting his life around deficits he adopted through a brain injury. I needed to be present. When I was younger, the moment was so significant that I imagined it. It is here suddenly.

Who gets to say that I get to serve my country with my passion?

Renick was an athlete. After a series of strokes, she was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular disease. The creation of this team was pushed for the last seven years by her.

She pretended to be a guy in the email. I didn't tell the truth. I only used my résumé as a reference. Stuart gave me the chance to send in a video, but he said I was a woman. Yes.

She gave up on her dream after COVID-19 closed another door. She had a baby during the Pandemic and then gave birth a few weeks later. She remembers calling her husband. I was prepared for him to say it wasn't realistic. He asked how you could say no.

He doesn't see much of my disability when I play. I told him to stay away from the tournament. If you come to the opening ceremony, you will see that I am very tired, I am having difficulty standing, and I am having trouble with my cognitive processing. I think it's a big thing for him to change because he wants his wife to put herself in harms way. He understands why I have to do this.

There's a beautiful game here. You can watch tournaments and teams.

There is a meeting on Wednesday, June 22.

• Red Bulls vs. NYCFC ( 8 p.m. ET)

• Kansas City vs. Omaha (8:30 p.m. ET)

• Tigres vs. Santos Laguna (8:30 p.m. ET)

Renick was away from her little girl. She says that being a mother has given her more purpose and that it is hard not to feel selfish. Legacy-building is a large part of it.

They beat Spain and the Netherlands in their first two games. The level is going to get better after someone asked if it was the same as when the men began. 2% of athletes can join this team. I'm looking forward to seeing how it progresses.

Renick came into the side to score six times against the Netherlands, pushing herself to the point of exhaustion that she needed medical treatment for. She's still very competitive.

Tricia Taliaferro, coach of the women's team, speaks to the players during a break in a match. Javier Luengo for ESPN

She says she almost resented the sport when she found out her career was over. I told you that I gave everything to you. It was very sad and I had to grieve.

I think I have done that. I am so confident in who that person is that I am in my career as a mother and a wife. Soccer came back up again. It was like now you have all of that and feel like you can run again. It was the most humble and awe-inspiring appreciation.

You can tell that his teammates are aware of his talent by the fact that he is the only FT3 on the team. They are always looking to give him the ball. As a relative newcomer to the side, he hasn't yet taken on the status his ability demands, but regardless, he delivered a match-winning performance against Netherlands, scoring a stunning hat trick.

His story is quite amazing. He had a stroke at birth and was flown to a hospital. He went through drug withdrawals and seizures for the first few months of his life because his birth mother was a drug user. He was told by his adoptive parents that he would struggle to walk. They were told to give him the ball and see what happened.

When he was 6 years old, he was playing in a rec league and scoring goals, but his progress was halted in 2016 when he was diagnosed with a heart problem. The player who plays club football for Michigan Wolves feels the effects of everything he has gone through.

He said it was hard with his right side. It's all natural for me to use my right if I think hard about it. My thought process has been messed up by the stroke at birth. I have to think about what I say and what I don't say. Many people don't know that I struggle with it.

Iran beat Brazil 4-1 in the semifinals to reach the final, where they will play the US. Gamesmanship was more important than goals in the contest. Iran's faking of injuries, time-wasting and complaining clouded what was, at times, an impressive performance. Before they were excluded, there was no secret to Russia's success.

The system to pay players as full-time pros was set up a decade ago. The coach told me how much Russia was paying. We are not able to match that. The funding for Brazil to go professional in the lead up to Rio 2016 was withdrawn last year.

There is a suggestion among the community at the tournament that countries with freer access to medical records may be able to facilitate player identification. The level of competition is not always mirrored at the resort, where teams hang out around the pool while you walk around.

One day, a U.S. soccer player and a Thailand player played chess, though the players don't mix much. Brunais said that some of the guys played chess but he was here to win. We can be friends later, but who knows when we could cross paths.

Between Germany and the US, Brunais was born. He followed in his brother's footsteps and stopped playing soccer.

He was in a few accidents and ended up on the team. I was in a helicopter crash in 2007, my first brain injury, and two years later someone stepped on an IED when I was within range. You are more vulnerable after a traumatic brain injury. Between two or three major incidents and then always being around explosions, it just jacked me up.

Josh has the highest medal you can get without being shot at. He saved many people.

He was in a bad place when he joined the team. I wasn't sure if he would make the squad. He set himself a challenge to make the team because he was an elite performer in the military. He did not do anything else. He is a leader, that's right.

Joshua Brunais was an inspiring leader on and off the pitch for the U.S. men. Javier Luengo for ESPN

Brunais is the leader of the camaraderie off the pitch.

Thegerm worm is named Chileshe Chitulangoma. Kevin McCandlish is known as the "sauce boss" because of his constant supply of dressings. When Sweet Baby Ray's barbecue sauce was found at the local supermarket, there was a collective sigh of relief.

Women were subjected to harder tests. They were tied at one with Japan. Catarina Guimaraes scored 10 goals at the finals. Guimaraes and Cross were both born with cerebral palsy and have limited balance and mobility in their arms. The families of the players, who had all flown in from the States, celebrated loudly in the stands after the four nil win against Australia.

You can dig in on any of the girls' stories. Some of them had to go through that at a young age. You can say that your daughter is playing in the World Cup. It makes me emotional to think about how they feel.

He was appointed at the end of the year. She was compelled to listen to her players' back stories as part of her job.

She asked if she could sit in. I was like "Oh my gosh, are you kidding me?" Jesslyn hit me the most when she woke up and couldn't walk the same way. It's amazing to me. Her spirit is amazing.

They have been through a lot and to be able to come back and excel is amazing. Jesslyn is the one to get me. She only went to the last camp. It was very late with her and Emily. I was asking for them to be in.

The importance of being able to balance both things was mentioned in the case of Joey Martin. Oh wow.

The presence of Martin can only be described as amazing. She says that 85% of the brain tumour was removed. The tumours was stable until early 2022, thanks to that.

The day before we left for the World Cup, I started a new round of cancer treatment. I took it twice daily throughout the competition in pill form, which was different from the last one. If it hadn't been in pill form, I wouldn't have been allowed to travel because the tumours is in a spot where surgery isn't an option anymore.

The hope is that the cancer will be stable again and that radiation will be used to treat it. Depending on how my body reacts to the pill, I could be on it for three to two years. The response of the tumours is what determines it.

The men's team has a bond that is hard to duplicate. "They all have something that they try to hide or suppress, and they come into an environment like this and it's more comfortable." They are related. It's a bond that none of us can match.

The U.S. Soccer's sporting director flew in to watch the men's team lose to Ukraine in the semifinals. Stewart told the players in a huddle that the game was closer than the score indicated.

Another sign of the level of investment is Stewart's presence. The fourth place finish is the best ever for the U.S., but the women are destined to go one better. After a group stage of mixed quality and levels, one of the most exciting games of the tournament will be Australia's match against Australia in the final.

The U.S. fought back from a goal down to win. Australia level again to take the game to overtime. Winnick is in a sweeper-keeper role. The United States won the game 4-2 thanks to the running of the player from the back. Martin sets up Kuhnel for her second and then adds the fourth herself late in the game to make it look like they lifted the trophy.

Martin said that every part of the final was a dream. I didn't know what I wanted. Throwing up four times in the game makes for a great story, and while I never wanted to be filmed throwing up where the world has access to it, this very embarrassing moment allows a chance to share more of the wonders of the game.

This group can become role models for aspiring players who may have thought soccer was not an option because of their different background. Taliaferro wants this to be a long-term project. There is a chance to build a team. This is a long term commitment for me. I want to build out this program and this team and the game because there are not many times you can do that.

Left to right: Catarina Guimaraes, Catherine Renick, Cassidy Leake and Annie Wickett having lunch in the resort after the match against Japan. The U.S. women's para national team, born in January, plays its first IFCPF World Cup. Javier Luengo for ESPN

There are some challenges with the size of the U.S. As more players become involved in the game, there is the possibility of more regional camps. As players age and dedicate more time to jobs, it can be hard to keep them. Sharp is working on a way to keep people playing with a centralised training program in Atlanta.

Brunais is involved in a steady stream of players in the program. They play in local leagues which lead to other opportunities. Defenders have worked as analysts for the U.S. U20. Some of the female players have already been spoken to about the possibility of expanding the program.

The pathway was set up to reflect the mainstream game. For families and individuals with a disability, their impairment won't be a barrier to success. I can't play club. We have a club system which makes it possible for you to. Someone with a disability can't get a professional route. There is a training program for the national team.

They can follow the same path if they show quality. Roles can be created by us. Young children with Cerebral palsy can look at Catarina or Jonah. They can have the same idols and keep playing.

By the year 2050, we want to be the best sport in the country, but by players becoming administrators, journalists, referees, coaches, fans. It starts with this kid looking at a role model and staying in the game and that is huge for me.
