The Department of State will no longer honor expired passports due to delays in processing.
The rule allowed U.S. citizens to return to the U.S. if their passports had expired before January 1, 2020.
Anyone traveling with an expired passport is urged to apply for a U.S. passport by contacting their nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
The current processing time for a new passport is between eight and eleven weeks. Mail service is the fastest way to get a passport renewed.
The letter "X" designates a different gender identity for travelers.
Travelers with expired passports are encouraged to get their passports renewed sooner rather than later. People who travel internationally within the year can get their passports expedited for $60.
