Bob Boughner and his staff have been fired by the San Jose Sharks.
Boughner had been San Jose's coach for parts of three seasons, but failed to make the playoffs each time. When Pete DeBoer was fired after 33 games, he took over as coach of the Florida panthers.
Boughner's contract was worth 1.5 million dollars. The assistant coaches weren't retained.
As the Sharks narrowed the field for their vacant general manager position, they made a decision. According to multiple reports, Ray Whitney and Mike Grier are among the final candidates. They would be the first general managers of their kind.
The firing of Boughner came late in the summer. The NHL has eight head-coaching vacancies. The only other head-coaching job that is open is for the Jets. As the calendar flips to July, it makes it harder for Boughner and his staff to find NHL jobs.
The longest absence from the playoffs in franchise history has been three years for the Sharks. There are a lot of players with different levels of trade protection. The salary cap for San Jose is $26.5 million, and the four players are all over the age of 30.
Sportsnet reported that Boughner had been fired.
