  • The hearings on January 6 had hurt Trump according to Sen. Pat Toomey.

  • The retiring senator said that Trump's hold on the nomination was now less secure.

  • "I think we'll have a better candidate," he said.

The public hearings from the House select committee investigating January 6, 2021, damaged the reputation of former President Donald Trump according to a Republican senator.

The retiring lawmaker was asked at the end of the interview if he believed the hearings would prevent Trump from running for a second term.

I'm not sure if it means that. One of the seven Republican senators who voted to convict Trump on a charge of inciting an insurrection after the Capitol riot said he would have to decide whether to run.

He was disqualified from serving in public office because of his behavior after the election. The revelations from this committee make his path to the Republican nomination more difficult.

Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House staffer, testified that Trump knew the crowd on the National Mall was armed and that he tried to grab the steering wheel of his limo.

According to members of the former president's inner circle, Hutchinson's testimony was the most damning day of the hearings and that her allegations were difficult to dismiss.

The former president, who is still seen by most of the party as its undisputed leader and a shoo-in for the 2024 nomination, was a weak candidate according to the comments made by Toomey.

"If he decides to throw his hat in the ring, I think we'll have a stronger candidate," he said.
