A federal judge ordered a new trial for the two alleged ringleaders of a 2020 plot to abduct Michigan Gov.
Adam Fox, 39, and Barry Croft, 46, have both been charged with kidnapping conspiracy and agreeing to use a weapon of mass destruction, after prosecutors say they organized a group of anti-government extremists united by anger over Covid restrictions.
The Detroit News reported that the judge said a new trial should start as soon as possible.
If they are found guilty, the men could face life imprisonment.
Public comments about the case have been kept to a minimum.
During an April trial, a jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict on the charges against Fox and others. The men were portrayed by prosecutors as dangerous far-right extremists who were serious about their plan to abduct a governor, but defense attorneys say the charges are nonsense because their clients were entrapped in a conspiracy. According to prosecutors, the plan was to have a sham trial for the governor over her Covid restrictions. Prosecutors said that the plan was to put the woman on a boat and leave her adrift. In June 2020, the FBI's confidential source became aware of the Michigan group after attending a far-right meeting in Ohio. The men were arrested in October 2020 for trying to raise $4,000 to blow up a bridge so they wouldn't have to worry about being kidnapped.
Two men indicted in the case pleaded guilty and said they wanted to start a civil war and prevent Joe Biden from becoming president.
A judge ordered a new trial for two people.
There were two acquitted in the kidnapping plot trial.
