Jackson was sworn in a few minutes after noon on Thursday in a small ceremony at the Supreme Court, directly after Breyer's retirement from the court.

The Constitutional oath of office was administered by the Chief Justice and the second Judicial oath of office was administered by the Chief Justice.

She was sworn in immediately after the Supreme Court issued its final outstanding opinions, ruling that the Environmental Protection Agency is limited in its ability to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from power plants and that the Biden administration can repeal the Trump-era immigration policy.

Jackson will be sworn in as a justice at a formal investiture ceremony in the fall, but Roberts said that she can begin her work as a justice now.

Jackson is the first black woman to serve on the Supreme Court.

What To Watch For

The first term of the court will include a number of major cases, including disputes on religious liberty, voting rights and affirmative action in college admissions. Jackson has said that she will not be involved in the case due to her ties to Harvard University. Shortly before Jackson was sworn in, the court said it would take up a lawsuit on the independent state legislature doctrine and North Carolina's congressional maps. The voting rights case could make it easier for states to overturn election results if they so choose.

Key Background

Jackson became the first Black female justice on the Supreme Court when she was confirmed by the Senate in April. A justice from the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals has been appointed to the Supreme Court. In January, when Democrats were in control of the White House and the Senate, Justice Breyer decided to retire, paving the way for Jackson's confirmation.

The ascension of Jackson to the Supreme Court comes at a time when public trust in the court has plummeted due to a number of controversial rulings. Increased security for Supreme Court justices has been approved by Congress after a draft opinion was leaked weeks before the official ruling. Gun control laws and the separation of church and state were rolled back by the 6-3 conservative court.

The Supreme Court Justices will be replaced immediately.

The Senate has confirmed Ketanji Brown Jackson to the supreme court.

The Supreme Court Justice's exit opens a seat for Biden, and a political battle.
