Remembering Sonny Barger Getty

The founder of the Hells Angels has passed away.

He posted a message on his Facebook page that said, "If you are reading this message, you'll know that I'm gone." The note should be posted immediately after my death.

He said he enjoyed the time he spent with his club brothers, family, and friends the most.

Sonny was raised by his alcoholic father after his mother left the family when he was four months old. He dropped out of 10th grade after being suspended many times for fighting.

The military discovered that he forged his birth certificate in order to join, after he was discharged from the Army.

The Oakland Hells Angels just hit their 65th year of existence, and Sonny was a member of a few biker gangs. He became the national president after his predecessor went to jail. The headquarters was relocated to Oakland.

The Hells Angels had stories of racism. Sonny said in a 2000 interview that the club was not racist but that there were enough racist members that no black guy would get in.

In 1973, he was arrested for possession of narcotics and a weapon, and in 1988 for conspiracy, after they found guns and explosives in his possession.

He and 33 others were indicted in 1979 for violating the Racketeers Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, but they were acquitted the next year.

Sonny had his vocal cords removed due to throat cancer he was diagnosed with in 1983. He had surgery in 2012 to have a part of his body removed due to cancer.

He is survived by his family.

The man was 83.

I am sad.
