The world's largest chocolate factory, Barry Callebaut, halted production at its plant in Belgium after a salmonella outbreak was detected, just months after an outbreak at a Ferrero chocolate factory was linked to more than 300.
Barry Callebaut said in a statement that it stopped production after detecting the disease in a production lot.
All products manufactured since Monday have been blocked by the company.
Customers who may have purchased contaminated products are being reached by the chocolate maker.
The experts at Barry Callebaut identified the source of the problem.
The company said it plans to get to the root of the issue while keeping regulators informed and added production will only resume after the investigation is complete.
The shares of Barry Callebaut were down.
Barry Callebaut says on its website that its chocolates are used by many people. The company extended its supply agreement with Hershey. It's not clear if the factory made any Hershey products.
More than 350 people from 16 different countries got sick after eating contaminated chocolate eggs. Ferrero was forced to close its factory in Belgium in April after initially playing down the risks. Some of the company's products from the U.S. market were affected by the recall. The Italian chocolate maker's factory in Arlon was allowed to reopen earlier this month under strict conditions that included close monitoring of raw materials and final products to see if they meet all food safety standards.
