Bird rattles in a 3-pointer for the Storm (0:16)

Sue Bird hits a 3-pointer after getting the ball on the wing. There is a time and a place.

Sue Bird became the winningest player in league history when the Storm defeated Las Vegas 88 78 on Wednesday.

Bird, who announced earlier this month that this will be her final season in the league, beat Lindsay Whalen's career total. Bird and Whalen are the only two players in league history to win 300 games. Swin Cash, who played four seasons in Seattle with Bird, is tied for third.

Bird has an even bigger lead over Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury because all of those players split their careers between multiple teams.

"That's amazing, I played with Bird before I joined the team's coaching staff," said the Storm coach, who retired and joined the team's coaching staff. She might say it's because she's older. It's always the reply. An amazing player has an impact on the game for a long time.

It's more than the assists with Sue, it's the big shots. She played good defense tonight. She's an amazing player with a long career and deserving of every single record she's about to break because she's played 20 years.

Bird downplayed the accomplishment, like she did when she became the WNBA's all-time leader in games and minutes played, as a product of the 19 seasons she has played since being drafted by Seattle. She said that Whalen achieved the record in less games.

Bird was given more credit by the Las Vegas coach who was playing for the New York Liberty.

She has been on a lot of good teams. She is always the head of the snake. For a reason, she is who she is. She makes the right play many times.

The Storm debut of Tina Charles was overshadowed by the strong fourth quarter from Seattle. She came off the bench for the first time in her career after signing with Seattle.

Charles had started more games than any other player in league history before she came off the bench. Charles started more games than Augustus did before she came off the bench.

In her debut, Charles had 4 points, 5 rebound, 1 assist, and 1 steal.

Bird had 13 points and 6 assists in 25 minutes, but her milestone was much bigger.

She's a winner.
