  • When workers use their badges to sign in, they are tracked byTesla.

  • Insider confirmed that the car company sent emails to employees who weren'tbadged in.

  • According to reports, on May 31, Musk ordered staff to return to work for 40 hours a week.

The professional network app Blind was used by aTesla employee to post about their office attendance.

An automated email fromTesla was posted to Blind by an employee of the company. The person was told in the email that they hadn't used their badges in at least 16 days. The email was confirmed to be authentic by an employee of the company.

There was a request for comment from aTesla spokesman.

The email said it was an automatic notification. There is no record of you using your badges to enter a facility over the course of 30 days, so you are receiving this email. Employees are expected to be in the office full time. Illness, vacation or traveling for business are some of the reasons why you might not have badges. Please clear the reason for your absence with your manager by email and send a copy to absence@tesla.com.

The new policy may be a deterrent for workers.

The person said it felt wrong. It feels like it's an overstep to bother me. The thing is controlling. It's not nice.

Users are verified via their company emails. The Blind user didn't reply to the request for comment.

According to reports, on May 31, Musk issued an ultimatum to the staff, telling them to either quit or return to work for 40 hours a week. The billionaire said the move is to promote equality between factory workers and executives.

The Information reported on Monday that it was difficult for employees to find desk space and parking spots at the factory because of Musk's desire for the entire workforce to come back to work. According to the publication, some managers told workers to come in less than five days a week because of the lack of space.

It's not the first time thatTesla has started tracking sign-ins. Insider was the first to report that JP Morgan was usingdashboards and reports to track office attendance. Insider previously reported that the data was used to enforce return-to-office quota, including through calls and emails from managers to staffers who weren't meeting their quota.

Several employees told Insider that the new policy made them look for other jobs.

A similar response could be given by the employees of the company. Recruiters at major companies, including Amazon and Microsoft, began targeting employees on LinkedIn who might be against Musk's return-to-office policy.

Musk said he plans to eliminate 10% of his employees because of the future of the US economy. The layoffs have begun.
