Launching YC is a platform where people can sort startup by industry and launch date. Users are invited to vote for new companies to help them climb up the rankings, try out product demos and learn about the founding team.
The program has existed for years but only for YC founders according to the post.
Launch is being used by Y Combinator to target founders, developers, investors and job-seekers who are looking for the next big thing. Y Combinator can launch on any day of the week. YC head of communications Lindsay Amos said that YC founders can announce via Launch before the demo day. The biannual event is more evergreen to me.
Amos said over email that they did this to solve a problem every founder faces.
One of the loudest criticisms of the model in recent years is that it is hard to stand out in a group. Due to how important distribution is for early-stage startups, YC offering a way for them to make a bit more noise may make the implied equity cost of its program more attractive.
1,000 companies per Y Combinator batch? RIP Y Combinator
Product Hunt, a nearly decade-old website that is the go-to place for founders to launch their products and services to users, appears to have been taken a not-so-subtle jab by the accelerator. Y Combinator doesn't have a comment section but they are taking feature requests. Product updates from YC alumni will be the only things that will be included in Launch.
Amos wrote that he encourages YC founders to launch on many platforms in order to reach customers, investors, and candidates.
