San Juan Island, Washington, USA

A spectacular light show can be seen from the waters of Garrison and Westcott Bays. Travelers flock to these bodies of water once the sun has set because they are bioluminescent.

The new moon in the summer is a good time for tours.

The San Juan Brewing Company is a good place to grab a beer afterglow. There is a lighthouse in Lime Kiln Point State Park.

Angkor Wat is one of the most well-known places in Cambodia. In the southern part of the country near Sihanoukville is an island where you can snorkel. If you book a boat tour that takes you out on the water, you should swirl your hand through the water to see the plankton at their best.

Manialtepec Lagoon, Mexico

Oaxaca's Manialtepec Lagoon is famous for its bioluminescent light show. You can jump in the boat while you are in it. Locals used to believe in bathing in the phosphorescent lagoon. Light makes it difficult to see bioluminescence, so be sure to time your dip with the new moon.

You can stay in Puerto Escondido and take a tour. The lagoon is close to Puerto Escondido.

Bird-watching is one of the must-do activities afterglow. The area is home to a number of birds.

Waitomo Caves, New Zealand

The Waitomo Caves in New Zealand are one of the most famous examples of bioluminescence. In a striking display, the worms dangle from stalactites reaching down from the caves'ceiling, blanketing the surface in a bright blue glow.

The main Glowworm Cave is available for booking at the visitor center.

You can take in the views of the rocky gorge and limestone formations when you walk the trail loop afterglow.

Vieques, Puerto Rico

Mosquito Bay on Vieques is the most spectacular of the bioluminescent bays in Puerto Rico. Millions of single-celled organisms called dinoflagellates light blue when disturbed, creating a mind-blowing spectacle for those who venture out on the water via kayak. If you want to see fish jet out from under your boat like shooting stars, you can use a glass-bottomed kayak. The phenomenon is hard to capture on camera, so just enjoy it.

The waters came back to pre-hurricane levels after Hurricane Maria, but the glow was a bit dimmer. Book your trip on a new moon.

Take advantage of the Caribbean sun and watch the turquoise sea from the mile-long golden arcs of sand at Sun Bay.

Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee

There are places around the world where you can see fireflies. The synchronous firefly is one of the 19 different species of them. The bugs have a trick up their sleeves for a couple of weeks in May and June.

During firefly season, the park runs a lottery to avoid overcrowding, and evening access is a hot ticket.

Post-glow activities include visiting the national park for another day and heading south on the winding mountain roads to the highest point in the Smoky Mountains. The peak has views that stretch over 100 miles.

Dismals Canyon, Alabama

Dismals Canyon is located in a rural area of Northern Alabama and is the oldest accessible primeval forest east of the Mississippi River. The Dismalites are a group of glowworms that live in the canyon.

The moss-covered rocks of the canyon are lined with tiny worms that glitter in the dark. The best time to see the Dismalites is in May and September.

The Bankhead National Forest contains waterfalls, walking trails, horseback riding trails and canoeing routes. Motorized vehicles are not allowed within the wilderness boundaries.

Luminous Lagoon, Jamaica

It was a vital port for the sugar trade between England and Jamaica during the 18th century. One of the most spectacular sites in the Caribbean is located in the lagoon, where tiny organisms glow in the warm waters.

You can book tours in Falmouth or hotels in Montego Bay, which are close to each other. The best way to see the lagoon is to swim in it.

There are post-glow activities at the Glistening Waters Restaurant.

The bio-luminescent mushrooms on Japan's island Hachij-jima make you feel like you are in a Lewis and Clark novel. Over seven species light up the forest floor during the rainy season. If you go to the botanical gardens, you can see the fluorescent fungi.

The top-notch Urami-ga-taki Onsen is a decadent spot with free entry that overlooks a waterfall and is located in Hachij-jima.
