Serena Williams reacts during ladies’ singles first round match against Harmony Tan of France at Wimbledon.

It is hard to imagine Serena Williams ending her career that way. She won her first Grand Slam at the U.S. Open and some of her biggest wins came there. It is difficult to see how the U.S. Open will be any better than Wimbledon. She will go to New York a little more polished. Losing in the third round probably isn't that different from the first one.

Williams fought back from a break in the first set and won the first four points of the third set tiebreak. It wasn't enough. Tan was the worst type of player Serena could have faced. Tan was a junkballer, throwing anything she could find in the kitchen sink. Serena, lacking anywhere near tour-level singles- match timing (she had only played doubles in a Wimbledon prep this year) never got to clock any sort of speed consistently coming at her, as well as having to run from not just side to side but to the net and back as Since the first round of Wimbledon last year, Serena hasn't been on court in a singles match. She tore her hamstring in that match and hadn't been seen since. The hard miles Tan had put her through took their toll on her. The boulder would always come back down the hill.

Serena doesn't seem to know what the future holds, but we can be sure she'll do what she wants. We all had a picture of Serena walking off into the night after collecting her number. Her body doesn't seem to hold up for that. It is so rare that so few's do. When Pete Sampras called it quits a day after winning the U.S. Open, a lot of people thought it was a done deal. That's the exception.

It is the kind of exit we can expect for Roger, whether he comes back in the fall or next year and retires. At the same age as Serena, he will have three knee surgeries. You can only ask so much. Even if a recent surgery has given him some hope, it is likely that his career will be cut in half. When he played his final match, Agassi had a back injury. Boris Becker is in jail.

Serena was able to take the court at 40 because of her determination and fitness. She was never going to walk off in her 30s because of those things. There are two things when you are 40: playing and being Serena. Serena didn't manage the latter.

She can end her career with a racket in her hand if it is to be the end. Everyone should be given the chance to go out on their shield.

Dollars & some change

Hockey Canada is showing how serious change can happen when it comes to sexual assault and the cover-ups of it. Hockey Canada settled a lawsuit with a woman who claimed she was raped by eight hockey players on a golf outing, and now many corporations have stopped funding Hockey Canada.

If more than one company refused to work with the team, what will Dan Snyder do? If the gambling companies, beer companies, and dick-pill companies stopped their checks if they didn't think the punishment for Deshaun was enough. It is possible that cash is the only way to communicate with these people.
