The optional subscription service will offer exclusive, experimental, and pre-release features. This week, the service will be available in the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and Saudi Arabia.
The exclusive features include the ability to change the app icon, see who re-watched a story and pin a friend to the top of your chat history as a "BFF." Some of the features can only be accessed by subscribers, but others can be accessed via the main app.
The new service is a break from the advertising model that is used by the company. It makes money selling hardware, like its Spectacles smart glasses, but it doesn't make a lot of money. The company's stock price plummeted over the last two months after it announced a hiring freeze.
