Stephen Colbert made a joke at the expense of former national security advisor Michael Flynn.

Flynn paused before answering a question from Cheney during the January 6 panel's hearing. Flynn was asked if he believed in the peaceful transfer of power in America and if the Capitol riot was justified.

Colbert said that Flynn was a general in the army. You swore an oath to uphold the constitution.

He asked, "How does Michael Flynn sing the national anthem?", before bursting into song with his band.

"Oh say can you fifth, fifth, fifth, fifth, fifth?" Colbert asked. By the twilight's Fifth Fifth, what so proudly weFifth?

The audience was asked to join in his song.

Flynn was involved in trying to keep Trump in power after he lost the election. Flynn was one of the people who drafted an order that would have instructed the Pentagon and the Secretary of Defense to "seize" voting machines and investigate Trump's baseless accusations of voter fraud.

Flynn invoked the right against self-incrimination when he appeared before the select committee in January.

In September 2021, Colbert criticized Flynn for pushing a baseless conspiracy theory about a vaccine being added to salad dressing.
