Economy passengers who break into a cold sweat at the thought of a long haul flight will be happy to know that things are finally changing.
Air New Zealand confirmed this week that it will be launching its first "Skynest" sleeppods with the new jets joining its fleet in four years.
The new economy-class sleeppods for flights to the U.S. and Europe were included in the message that said it was time to swap the headrest for bedrest.
New Zealand's national carrier, Air New Zealand.
A couple of years ago, the sleeppods were unveiled by the airline, which came with a charging port, a reading light, and bedding. The design includes a privacy curtain. Five economy seats have been removed from the Boeing 787-9 in order to make room for a set of six Pods.
This is economy, so there has to be at least one, but you won't be able to use a Skynest Pod for the entire flight. You will only be able to get one slot per passenger per flight. There is yet to be an announcement of the additional cost.
feedback from customers highlighted the need for a good night's sleep and the need for more space and comfort, which led to the design of the sleeppods.
Greg Foran, the carrier's CEO, said: "New Zealand's unique location puts us in a position to lead on the ultra long-haul travel experience." We know that it's important for our customers to arrive well-rested.
They want to hit the ground running when they get to their first holiday spot. We wanted to give our economy customers a lie-flat option. The economy travel experience will be changed by it.
Even if it is only for four hours, a nap in a sleep Pod will help relieve the stress of being stuck in coach on a long flight.
