According to sources, the New York Knicks are a strong contender to sign the Dallas Mavericks guard.

league sources said that it was widely expected that he would sign a four-year deal in excess of $100 million to join the Knicks.

The New York Knicks would need to make at least one additional move to create the necessary salary-cap space to sign him. The Mavs could pursue a sign-and-trade in order to get back their assets.

After joining the starting lineup on a full-time basis in December, he established himself as Dallas' second option behind All- NBA guard Luka Doncic.

The Mavericks went to the Western Conference finals for the first time in 11 years, thanks in large part to the play of point guard Monta Ellis, who averaged 21.6 points in the playoffs.

The team's top priority in the off-season was ranked by Cuban and Harrison. The four-year, $85 million deal guard Fred VanVleet signed with the Toronto Raptors in 2020 is comparable to the five-year contract the Mavs are willing to give him, according to sources.

After the trade deadline, the Mavs offered a four-year, $55.5 million contract extension to the unrestricted free agent, but he chose not to accept it. He was confident that he would make a lot more money as a free agent.

Rick Brunson said that his son was willing to sign the extension if it was offered. If the Mavs had the chance to trade for a star, Dallas decided to hold off on talks until after the deadline as an extension would have prevented them from doing so.

Due to the Knicks' close ties to the Brunson family, New York was expected to be a threat to the Mavericks. Leon Rose, the president of the Knicks, has known the man for a long time. The first player client that Rose represented was Rick Brunson. The New York Knicks agreed to hire Rick Brunson as an assistant coach this summer, he was previously an assistant for the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Wolves.

As opposed to deferring to a perennial Most Valuable Player in Dallas, the Knicks can offer Brunson the chance to be their primary point guard.

"It's a great fit in Dallas, but at the end of the day, my son is no different than the next man," Rick said. Everyone wants what Luka has, so you try to raise them in a way that makes them understand the game. I'm not interested in who you are. Everyone wants to feel like they can do this too. I don't think the grass is better on the other side, but we'll go through all the pros and cons of staying here or moving somewhere else this summer.
