One of the most populous counties in Texas won't prosecute women who choose to have an abortion.

The day after the Supreme Court of the United States overturned the landmark abortion ruling, the sheriff of Bexar County made a statement.

Texas is one of the states that plans to ban almost all abortions after the Supreme Court ruled that states have the authority to do so. Rape and incest are not exceptions for pregnancies that result from them.

He will defend his daughters' rights to do what they feel is right with their own bodies.

He doesn't have control over their adult bodies. It is not my job as their sheriff. I will not punish Texas women for pursuing the same rights.

The sheriff of Texas is the most prominent to speak out against the Supreme Court's ruling.

The bureaucrats in Washington D.C. and Austin should be ashamed of themselves. The color of my office will not be used to do that. My job is to chase criminals, not people.

In terms of population, Bexar County is the fourth most populous county in the state. Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzalez said he would not prosecute anyone who sought an abortion.

Dozens of elected prosecutors throughout the United States signed a pledge Friday agreeing that banning abortion is a threat to their communities.

I took an oath to protect my community as a prosecutor. Gonzalez said that using limited resources to prosecute personal healthcare decisions would be a violation. Outlawing abortion won't end abortion, it will simply end safe abortions and prevent people from seeking the care and help they need for fear of criminal prosecution I don't want my community to be put at risk.

The pledge was also signed by his peers in Texas.

Gonzalez didn't say he wouldn't enforce the law. The district attorney may still prosecute providers of illegal abortions according to Texas Public Radio.

Some prosecutors in Texas may pursue criminal prosecutions against abortion providers who violate the state's pre-roe abortion law.

More than 57,000 Texas residents received abortions in 2020.

Most of the time, abortion is not available in Texas. We know what happened after the case was thrown out.

Any Texas abortion law violations will be prosecuted by the Tarrant County District Attorney.
