The top White House lawyer was concerned about Trump going to the Capitol, according to Cassidy Hutchinson.
If Trump followed through, Pat Cipollone said, he would be charged with everything.
On January 6th, Trump did not attend the Capitol.
Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House aide, testified on Tuesday that Pat Cipollone, the top White House lawyer, was worried that President Donald Trump would be charged with a crime if he went to the Capitol on January 6.
Mr. Hutchinson told the January 6 Select Committee of a conversation she had with Cipollone on January 6. If we make that movement happen, we're going to be charged with everything.
According to Hutchinson, Cipollone was worried that Trump could be charged with obstruction of justice if he went to the Capitol on January 6.
"He was worried that it would look like we were inciting a riot or encouraging a riot to happen up at the Capitol," Hutchinson said during one of four videotaped depositions she conducted with the panel.
The president didn't want to go to the Capitol on January 6 because Congress was going to certify the election.
The views of Cipollone are important. The White House counsel is not a personal lawyer for the president. Nixon's White House counsel, John Dean, turned on the president after the Watergate break-in.
