After leaving a rally of his supporters in Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2021, former President Donald Trump flew into a rage when the head of his Secret Service detail told him that they would return to the White House.
Tony Ornato, a former White House deputy chief of staff, told Hutchinson that Trump lashed out at Engel when he refused to bring him to the capitol because of safety concerns.
Trump said he would take him to the Capitol. Hutchinson remembered being told.
He grabbed for the steering wheel.
After Engel told Trump to take his hand off the steering wheel, Trump used his free hand to lunge at him.
According to Hutchinson, Ornato told the story and Engel was in the room with him.
Hutchinson testified that Trump wanted the metal detectors at the rally to be removed because the crowd wasn't there to hurt him. This month, the committee has held six hearings. Hutchinson's testimony is the focus.
