Difficult to assess the scale of Russian and Ukrainian casualties. NATO estimates as many as 40,000 Russian casualties in the first month of war, but Russian officials have only confirmed 1,300 deaths.

Despite not releasing reliable figures for its casualties, officials have made clear that the war in the east of the country is getting worse for the Ukrainians.
