The lie-flat economy beds will be introduced by Air New Zealand.

The bunks will be installed on the 787-9. Air New Zealand will launch a JFK-Auckland route in September.

Air New Zealand said it had researched the product for five years before considering it.

The Skynest would have two rows of bunks. Bunks have a length of more than 6 feet and a width of less than 2 feet. The lighting for the bunks would be designed for sleeping.

"We see a future where an economy class customer on long-haul flights would be able to book the Economy Skynest in addition to their Economy seat, get some quality rest and arrive at their destination ready to go."
