The Knicks have given out some of the worst contracts in the NBA over the last decade. Some of them were good ideas. When they signed him to a $100 million contract in 2010, he had about 75 jumps left in his knees and was playing for Mike D'Antoni.
Even though the Knicks won 54 games in the 2012-13 season, they could have kept Carmelo Anthony if he hadn't started the season playing like a candidate for the NBA's Most Valuable Player award. The Knicks were supposed to make a run after they lost out on James.
Joakim Noah, who signed on to be the Knicks starting center, is one of the legendary ones, along with Eddy Curry, who is well past his prime. The Knicks are prepared to make the most financially costly mistake in their history.
In Luka Doni's absence he was excellent for the Mavericks. He scored 21.6% of his points from the field and 34.8% from three. Doni was able to return to the floor after scoring 41 and 31 points in two games against the Utah Jazz.
It deserves a significant raise, but a max deal? In order to get rid of Kemba Walker's contract, the Knicks spent the first round of the draft trading for players and then trading them away minutes later. His father was hired by the Knicks as an assistant.
This is quite the effort for a player entering his fifth NBA season whose career-high in scoring is 16.3 points per game, doesn't crack 6-foot, and has never averaged 5 assists per game. His size is going to make him a liability on defense, and there is no ball-dominant force on the Knicks like Doni, absorbing all of the attention on regular basis or wearing down opposing perimeter defenders with those broad shoulders, making it harder for them
The Knicks have a plan in place to bring Brunson to Madison Square Garden. The golden goose is supposed to put the golden eggs in the basket at least 12 times a game. The Knicks are selling out for him like he is a perennial all-star, even if he isn't an option for the team anymore. Unless he makes another leap next season, in a conference with Trae Young, DeMar Derozan, LaMelo Ball, Cade Cunningham, JimmyButler, Jaylen Brown, Bradley Beal, Khris Middleton, and even Fred VanVleet.
If he never makes an all-star or All-NBA team, this is another Knicks free agency move that will do little to improve the team. A team that is close to the playoffs would be the best place for him. Maybe a team like the Los Angeles Clippers, or the Boston Celtics, who need a little bit more power on offense.
Knicks fans, don't blame him if he becomes your next Curry. One year ago, the contract he sees was not very likely. Even though they are trying to get All-NBA level max players to New York, they end up giving the money to whoever will take it.
