A judge ruled Monday that Utah's law banning all abortions will be put on hold for two weeks.

Louisiana became the first state to have its abortion laws blocked because of a lawsuit.

Abortion providers have filed lawsuits against the states of Kentucky, Idaho and Mississippi, where the ban won't go into effect for a few more days.

A lawsuit has been filed in Texas to try to stop the state from banning abortion before the ban goes into effect in a few weeks, and a hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.

Federal courts are allowing other states to ban abortion. When abortion was legal on the federal level, federal judges in South Carolina, Ohio and Alabama blocked state-level bans.

A judge in Florida is considering a 15-week abortion ban that was enacted prior to the Supreme Court's decision and is set to take effect on July 1. Despite the fact that the Florida Supreme Court has upheld abortion rights in the state constitution, Republicans in the state passed the law.

Chief Critic

State officials have upheld their abortion ban. "We are fully prepared to defend these laws in our state courts, just as we have in our federal courts," the Louisiana Attorney General said in a statement Monday.

Key Background

On Friday, the Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 decision that legalized abortion in the U.S. The Guttmacher Institute projects that 26 states will eventually ban or severely restrict abortion after the court ruled on the case. Even if the U.S. constitution doesn't protect abortion rights, they are still protected under state constitutions.

Surprising Fact

Louisiana abortion providers had to argue the state's laws are unconstitutional because they can't make other arguments under the state constitution. Louisiana voters approved a ballot measure in 2020 stating, "nothing in this constitution shall be construed to secure or protect a right to abortion or require the funding of abortion."

This is when states will start banning abortion.

Trigger Bans can't be used in Louisiana until a state court rules on them.
